Church Teachers' College | Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Programme is another broad based area of study and prepares teachers to teach students between the ages of 3+ and 7. Therefore, it includes infant education as well as education for Grades 1 and 2 of the primary level. Much of the preparation of the students demands hands-on experiences in creating, designing and making artifacts that can stimulate and enhance learning at this level.

General Objectives:

The programme aims at providing high quality experiences for both pre-service and in-service teachers who are guided by the Joint Board of Teacher Education tenets and lead to the learning of the philosophical, theoretical and experiential knowledge required by all early childhood teachers. To a large extent the programme delivery is based on the standards and goals defined by the JBTE and the Ministry of Education as measures of developmental and academic success.

General Objectives:

  1. Five CXC/CSEC subjects including English A at the General Proficiency Grades I, II or III ( III - effective June 1998) or their equivalent.  A Candidate with four CXC/CSEC subjects at General Proficiency Grades I, II or III as above and two subjects at Grade III obtained prior to June 1998 will be deemed to have satisfied the minimum entry requirements.  English A  must be obtained at General Proficiency Grade I, II or III ( III - effective June 1998)
  2. Students reading Early Childhood, Primary, Literary studies and Special Education should possess the requirements stated in (i) which should include a science subject - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, or Human and Social Biology OR a Social Science subject such as History, Geography or Social Studies.
