General Requirement
- Five CXC/CSEC subjects including English A at the General Proficiency Grades I,
II or III ( III - effective June 1998) or their equivalent. A Candidate with
four CXC/CSEC subjects at General Proficiency Grades I, II or III as above and two
subjects at Grade III obtained prior to June 1998 will be deemed to have satisfied
the minimum entry requirements. English A must be obtained at General
Proficiency Grade I, II or III ( III - effective June 1998)
- Students reading Early Childhood, Primary, Literary studies and Special Education
should possess the requirements stated in (i) which should include a science subject
- Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, or Human and Social Biology OR
a Social Science subject such as History, Geography or Social Studies.
- In addition to requirements set out at (1) and (2), students reading Primary Specializations
must have the following: (a) Literary Studies Primary – CXC/CSEC English B,
General Proficiency grades I, II or III, or GCE “O” Level English Literature Grades
A, B or C or their equivalent; (b) Spanish Primary – CXC/CSEC Spanish General Proficiency
Grades I, II or III, or GCE O’ Level Spanish Grades A, B or C or their equivalent.
- Students entering the Early Childhood , Primary Spanish, and Special Education Programmes
whose qualifications do not include Mathematics at the CXC/CSEC General Proficiency
Grades I, II or III or GCE ‘O’ Level Grades A, B, or C or their equivalent,
may be accepted if they hold one of the following qualifications: CXC/CSEC General
Proficiency Grade ІV and Basic Proficiency Grades II or III, GCE ‘O’
Level Grade D, Junior High School Examination Certificate (JHSEC) High Average
and Distinguished ranges, Jamaica School Certificate, Grade Nine Achievement (70%
or above), and New Secondary Programme Certificate (NSPC) Mastery level.
SECONDARY EDUCATION
Applicants who wish to pursue the Secondary Education programme MUST
have Grade 1 or 2 – CXC General A or B – GCE ‘O’ Level in the subjects
in which they wish to specialize. Areas of Specialization:

Candidate for Mature Entry:
- Candidates over the age of 30 years seeking admission into the programme and who
do not have the academic qualifications set out above but who have completed at
least 5 years of teaching in one or more recognized schools must establish clear
evidence of their competence in the field. Candidate will have to do an assessment
to determine their level of competence. The candidate may also submit portfolio
which documents competence/accomplishments in the following ways:
- Representative sampling of work (where applicable) over a three-year period immediately
preceding application.
- Written 500 word account of life history and a vision of their role in education.
- Documentation to substantiate certificates/awards obtained in the informal setting,
e.g., on-the-job courses.
- Recommendations from professional educator(s) and person(s) who have supervised
him/her in his/her area of competence.
Transfer student:
-
Students may transfer their credit(s) from any approved tertiary institution The applicants
will be given credit for all courses in Years I, II and or III for which he/she
holds approved equivalent qualifications. Students will, however, be required to
do all courses in Years I, II and III for which they have not been granted credit.
